As you now know I have decided to choose James Bay's song 'Let it go' for my initial video task. The song is from the indie pop genre which traditionally have smaller budgets, so the videos coming from these genres tend to be more basic and minimalist.
Indie pop is a genre of alternative rock music that originated in the United Kingdom in the mid-1980s, with its roots in Scottish post-punk bands on the Postcard Records label in the early 1980s (Josef K and Orange Juice) and the dominant UK independent band of the mid-1980s, the Smiths.
With this information about the genre in mind, and having already analysed the original music video, I have an pretty solid idea for what I want the narrative for this video to be.
The idea: The concept for my video is based on the common topic in most music videos of love. The main character that Ben is playing has just come out of a relationship with Rhiann's character. He is spending the video, as the title of the song suggests, trying to 'let it go' and get over his love for her. However, as Ben starts to roam the beach with his guitar and his photograph of the two he begins to have flash back memories of his time spent with Rhiann and the fun they have together and is almost swayed to go back to his old feelings for her, until he remembers that he needs to forget about her and what she did to him in order to move on. Ben's character then becomes stronger, walking away from his past (or walking further down the beach) and decides to get rid of the photo of him and Rhiann by tearing away the half with Rhiann on, screwing it up and throwing it into the sand along with his feelings for her. The video then ends with a close up shot of the photo of Rhiann in the sand.
I'm hoping to make the video quite emotional so that the audience feel sympathy towards Ben's character and are able to relate to his situation. I aim to do this through the editing.

Change of Preliminary Task Idea
After originally wanting to do a Maroon 5 song for my preliminary task, I have had a change of ideas. I was finding it hard to think of a narrative to link with the lyrics of the song 'never gonna leave this bed' by Maroon 5 and it was getting to the stage where I figured it would be easier to change my song. Therefore instead of this song I have decided to create a 90 second video using James Bay's song 'Let it go' using these lyrics:
From walking home and talking loads
To seeing shows in evening clothes with you
From nervous touch and getting drunk
To staying up and waking up with you
But now we're sleeping at the edge
Holding something we don't need
All this delusion in our heads
Is gonna bring us to our knees
So come on let it go
Just let it be
Why don't you be you
And I'll be me
Everything that's broke
Leave it to the breeze
Why don't you be you
And I'll be me
And I'll be me
My ideas for the music video will still be heavily narrative based and I'm thinking about going a little further a field and using the beach at South Shields as my location. I now need to move on to creating my pre-production documents that will help me plan and execute my shoot.
